Tech Thoughts
Cost Comparison: SBC, Cox and Time Warner:

In Januaray I contacted SBC, Cox and Time Warner to find out about their internet business pricing with at least 1 static IP. For businesses I recommend business accounts with static IPs because the hardware is usually more dependable, service to businesses is usually better and it adds the possibility for a reliable and secure VPN.

Price shouldn’t be your only consideration when choosing an ISP. I consider tech support to be the most important and I’ve given SBC a tech support rating of 2 and Time Warner a rating of 3 and Cox a rating of 4 out of 5. The other issue is how often the internet disconnects. Again I’ve given SBC an internet disconnect rating of 2 and Cox and Time Warner both a rating of 4. However, all of Witzend Computing's clients call, on average, about 3 times a year with internet disconnect issues due to connection problems at their ISP.

One reason I've given SBC such a low rating is because their modems are known to disconnect and there are often connectivity issues between the phone boxes inside and the terminals outside. But that doesn't mean they should be counted out. In some areas they are the only option other than a wireless T1 or a Dedicated T1, both of which can be pricey and slow. A T1 only runs at 1.5 UP and DOWN*. SBCs business line modems are more stable than their home user modems and the service for businesses is better than for homes. It's obvious that they have been working hard on their customer service although it still lacks compared to Cox. One advantage of SBC is they don't make you sign a contract (at least not yet), so when you're setting up a new office they may be worth testing out for a few weeks.

The representatives all gave me general pricing. If you couple the internet with phone service, digital or regular, you may get a better deal. When you call, find out if they offer service in your area, how much the install fee is, what the UP and DOWN speeds are, how many static IPs you will receive and how long the contract is.

*Normally, internet DOWN speeds are faster than internet UP speeds, this is because the majority of businesses spend more time viewing websites (DOWN) than sending information to the internet (UP). E-mails, send information UP to the internet and use very little bandwidth. If you are hosting your own website through a web server in your network than you will need more UP bandwidth.
