Tape drives tend to break every two or three years

There are a myriad of programs out there that will
protect your network from viruses and spyware. Many
of them will slow your computer down by about 50%.
At Witzend Computing we recommend Symantec's
Norton Antivirus 2006 edition for Home Users and
Symantec's
Antivirus Corporate 10.0 for businesses. However,
even if you have antivirus protection on your network
you still may be susceptible to attacks. Viruses and
spyware run across your network looking for the weakest
link. If there's a hole, for example, a neighbor's
unsecured wireless network or a laptop brought in
from home that contains viruses or spyware, or a program
that opens a back door into your network, then the
malicious programs will find their way onto the other
computers on your network anyway. The alternative
is to control the computers. You can make your file
server into a security server so that it controls
potential problems, such as internet downloads. First,
we clean the entire network and eliminate all malicious
programs, then we control the computers so that even
if someone accidentally gets a malicious program on
their computer, it won't be able to do anything. And
the computers run continually at top speed. |
"It seems like the hard drives in our computers break often."

Unfortunately, hard drives last about 3 years. When
you buy your new computer, get the 3 or 4 year warranty
so you’ll be covered when your hard drive does
break. The good news is that hard drives now cost
$100 or less. At Witzend Computing, when we set up
computers, we make an image or a copy of the computer
in its pristine state. The image is then saved on
the server and if the hard drive for that computer
breaks, we'll install a new hard drive, copy the original
image back to that hard drive and get you back in
service fast. We also make sure that your e-mails,
My Documents, Shared Data is all on the server. In
the event that there is no image for the computer,
none of your data will be lost.
Server hard drives go down as well. For that reason we always recommend a minimum of
3 layers of redundancy. Most of our clients have 5 layers. We recommend affordable
RAID solutions with 3 hard drives on the server that are writing to each other in
real-time (the first 3 layers). Then 2 external hard drives, one that is on-site and
one that is taken off-site. For additional protection, we recommend over the internet
backups.

If we have to reinstall your computer, we first set aside your old hard drive with all of the data on it exactly as it was. We then put a new hard drive in your computer and install all the software and updates. After the install is complete we copy your data off the old hard drive onto the new hard drive and configure your settings and profiles. Later, if there's a problem or if you find you are missiong data, we still have your old hard drive with all the data on it just as it was. We can then go back to the old hard drive and retrieve the data or settings that you need. |
